Rugby Union Today: Team of the Week and Hot and Not

Another busy day in the rugby union game as we look back at the week’s action in the Champions Cup and name our best XV from the matches that took place.

What’s on the site

Leinster enjoyed another excellent day in the Champions Cup, thrashing Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens, and they have been rewarded with four players in our Team of the Week.

That competition is also discussed in ‘Who’s hot and who’s not,’ which delves into the main talking points from the past seven days. We duly look at Samuel Ezeala’s impressive Champions Cup debut for Clermont and Bath’s awful form in Europe.

What’s in the news

Johnny Sexton will miss Leinster’s clash against Northampton Saints this weekend and could well be a doubt for the Six Nations. The star fly-half was forced off on Saturday after injuring his knee and is seeing a specialist to determine the extent of the problem.

Elsewhere, Chiefs hooker Liam Polwart has sadly announced his retirement from playing at the age of just 24. Polwart may eventually make a return in the future but his battle with concussion means that the front-rower has opted out of the 2020 Super Rugby campaign.

Finally, the Wallabies will take on France for the first time since 2016 as part of their November tour in 2020. Australia will also face Ireland and England next year and Wales has been mooted as another potential opponent.

This piece of Danny Cipriani skill from the weekend has got people talking. Did he mean it?

Convinced Danny Cipriani meant this. Also convinced more fly-halves will try it from here on out, too. Catches out Connacht's entire backline. pic.twitter.com/dClnVJ6s6y

What’s on TV

The Champions Cup continues this weekend and BT Sport will broadcast all the games from Round Four. It is the second part of the double-header as Leinster and Northampton, Munster and Saracens, and Harlequins and Ulster are among those to do battle once again.

Elsewhere, the World Rugby Sevens Series comes from Cape Town this week and that will be shown on Sky Sports.
