Wallabies tighthead prop Taniela Tupou had his phone stolen near his team hotel following leaving a restaurant in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The 22-year-old was the victim of a “snatch and run” attack in the evening as the phone was stolen by a man who then fled in a waiting car.
According to Rugby Australia, Tupou initially believed it to be a team-mate pranking him but then realised that it wasn’t the case and raced to the vehicle, sustaining minor cuts as he attempted to retrieve the phone.
“Last night went out for dinner with the front rowers, it was just outside the hotel and I went back, someone came walking around and took my phone,” Tupou said in a statement.
“I thought it was one of the boys so I looked back and he was wearing a hoodie and ran with my phone.
“I tried to chase after him, he got in the car and I got a bit of a cut but I’m fine.
“The only thing is I lost my phone but I can live with that.”
Australia are currently preparing to face South Africa in their opening Rugby Championship match, at Ellis Park on Saturday, July 20.
