Rugby Union Today: Team of the Week and Hot and Not

Another busy day in the rugby union game as we look back at the weekend’s international action and name our best XV from the matches that took place.

What’s on the site

It was a good end to their World Cup preparations for England and New Zealand, who recorded comfortable victories over Italy and Tonga respectively, and they dominate our Team of the Week as a result.

Those warm-up encounters are also discussed in ‘Who’s hot and who’s not,’ which talks about George Bridge’s impressive performance for the All Blacks and Japan’s disappointing effort against South Africa.

Finally, our ‘My Rugby World Cup hero’ feature continues with Samoan legend Pat Lam, who was a key part of the Pacific Island team’s shock victory over Wales in 1991.

What’s in the news

Ireland will go into the World Cup as the number one side in the rankings following their victory over Wales at the weekend. They have gone above New Zealand into first while the Welsh, who briefly sat atop three weeks ago, have dropped to fifth.

Meanwhile, in club matters, Edinburgh have been given the go-ahead to build a new stadium on the back pitches of Murrayfield. It will have a capacity of 7,800 and be ready in time for the 2020/21 season.

Finally, Munster have announced the signing of Jed Holloway on a short-term contract. With a number of important back five forwards at the World Cup, the Waratahs player will provide cover at lock and in the back-row.

Following the conclusion of the World Cup warm-ups, the main action on Sky Sports comes from New Zealand and the Mitre 10 Cup as Waikato go head-to-head with Hawke’s Bay on Thursday.

On BT Sport, there is the Premiership Rugby 7s, which takes place over two days at Franklin’s Gardens, but the league season in England does not begin until October.
