Dan Evans touched down a remarkable four times as the Ospreys took the spoils in the Welsh derby following a 29-20 victory over the Dragons in the PRO14 on Saturday.
Allen Clarke’s men controlled much of the first half and deservedly went 7-0 up via Evans’ first try but somehow found themselves 17-10 in arrears at the break via two interception tries from Rhodri Williams and Hallam Amos.
Nevertheless, they re-found their composure and dominated the second period, with their full-back scoring three more times to take the hosts to a win.
After a dreadful run of form in the league and an awful few weeks off the field, which threatened their existence, this was the ideal tonic for the Swansea-based outfit.
Having gained a reprieve in midweek, with the respective bodies deciding that the Ospreys would continue to represent Wales in the PRO14 and in Europe, the players came out with intent on Saturday.
They dominated the scrum battle and made indents in the opposition rearguard, opening space for Evans to touch down unopposed for the opening score.
The Dragons were regularly being sent into reverse at the set-piece and looked like conceding again, but Williams and Amos both showed excellent instincts to intercept and remarkably give them the lead.
Jason Tovey also kicked a penalty but Luke Price responded with one of his own as the Newport-based side held a seven-point buffer at the break.
It was an advantage they would not hold for long, however. The Ospreys continued to create chances and reduced the arrears a minute into the second period through Evans.
Although Tovey’s effort off the tee gave the visitors a bit of breathing space, they were unable to contain the hosts’ full-back and successive tries from the flyer helped Clarke’s charges to a ninth PRO14 win of the season.
